Grey skies.
That's all I can see on the horizon these days. Dark clouds. And now the rain starts to pour.
To be honest, I kind of like the literal grey skies. But the figurative ones... Not so much. And definitely not the rough waters.
Life is unfair. And it's hardly ever unfair to your favour either. If it is, screw you and get lost. You're sucking up all the good stuff and this post ain't for you.
All the while we're each sitting on our own tiny boat, braving the choppy sea. Rocking up and down and up and down over the unforgiving waves.
Sometimes the waves are bigger than the rest and they come crashing down before one is even prepared for it. And once it's over, we sit there shivering, soaking clothes stuck to our cold bodies like a second skin. They offer no protection at all to the strong winds that toss us about.
There isn't even enough time to patch up the battered sides before the next wave hits again.
Drenched and cold, all we can do is cling to the sides of our boats and hold fast.
Because the worst would probably to fall into the dark, swirling waters and drown. Those times, the waves have risen so high, there's nothing to see but the huge wall of water that could be very well be the end of it.
(I really hate to drown.)
Yet there's no land in sight. So how long will this storm last? How far will it stretch? Can we really keep our grip or will we slip and fall? Will the boat hold up or overturn and get smashed to bits? Will the waves just keep getting bigger and bigger or will they calm down?
Or will life be kind for once and lift the storm?
Not likely.
Maybe we can offer a bribe? But what? Money, love, indifference? The best we can hope for would be a laugh in the face.
We strain and strain to see but why can't we find safe ground? Something solid and dry beneath our feet that we can rely on. That even if we slip, we wouldn't be swallowed up right away.
We can already imagine the relief that would wash over us even if it were nothing more than a small island with hardly enough standing room for one.
Only right now, what we can see when the waves die down for a moment is endless water that stretches on and on. And we wonder if we're even moving at all. The fear of this standstill can be overwhelming; that we feel that we may never get out of this storm ever.
But occasionally the clouds do part a little and narrow rays of sunlight shine through. A little annoying because we're blinded by it at first. And we're so lost in the greyness that we don't believe in this so-called 'light' anymore.
But maybe that's what we've been secretly hoping for. These rays are there to remind us that there might not be something ahead but there is something up there perhaps. Even if it's not solid, at least it's dry and warms our wet skin. Unlike the never ending coldness that we're experiencing right now.
Don't shun those rays. They didn't have an easy journey too. It's just the ones that care enough for us that they took a long stick and started poking into the clouds above us to make a hole for the light to pierce through.
Those rays that give us hope are the most precious of all. Hope is the one thing that we are in control of, not the storm nor the waves nor the clouds. We either want to have it or we don't.
When life presses you down, you struggle. You have to struggle. You can't just sit there and wait for the clouds to part. Heck, people poked a hole for you while trying to balance on their own rocky boat. So you have to push yourself.
And you hope. Sometimes, that's the only thing keeps us going in the wildest of tempest.
It's not always easy to hope when the future really seems bleak. And you've been torn down so many times you just don't need another disappointment.
But it is your choice that you make. Your own emotions that you choose to move on and look forward. To find the silver lining and put faith in it.
Not to say that the past should be ignored but it should not hold you back.
Stuff and people will let you down all the time but if you don't get up and lift your chin, you'll just look so pathetic wallowing at the bottom of your boat.
The storm will pass eventually and the boat would've taken some damage. A new storm might arrive anytime and land is still out of sight. But we take it and we deal with it right.
Because that's all we can do right now.
